Laboratory and teaching activities
The experimental activity plays an important role in the understanding and study of materials, in particular in the field of applications for Energy, where the chemical-physical and structural aspects of the materials are closely combined with the various types of use in energy harvesting, transformation, saving and storage.
The Advanced Materials for Energy Engineering course - [140487], 6 CFU, of the master's degree in Energy Engineering https://international.unitn.it/masterenergy includes half of the program in laboratory projects on the topics of: (i) surface treatment and durability of materials: cyclic mechanical fatigue and residual stresses; high temperature materials; (ii) galvanic cells - primary and secondary batteries; (iii) generation and use of hydrogen; fuel cells; (iv) photovoltaic materials and devices, traditional / commercial and in the research and development phase; (v) thermoelectric materials and devices; (vi) materials for wind energy collection devices.
The course of Materials Technology with Environmental Chemistry Laboratory (Tecnologia dei materiali con Laboratorio di chimica per l'ambiente - [140563]), 9 CFU, of the three-year degree course in Environmental and Territory Engineering (Ingegneria per l’Ambiente e il Territorio https://offertaformativa.unitn.it/it/l/ingegneria-l-ambiente-e-il-territorio provides for the participation of all students in chemistry laboratory sessions for (i) titrations and (ii) instrumental chemical analyses. In (i) experiments are carried out for the determination of water hardness and pH, while in (ii) some of the main analytical chemistry techniques are used, such as X-ray diffraction, X-ray fluorescence, Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) with EDXS microanalysis, optical and IR spectroscopy.
